This work is one of fifteen artist’s proofs (E.A. 8/15), signed in ink by Pierre Soulages. It includes a handwritten dedication by the artist to Daniel Abadie, art critic and exhibition curator. The screen print was published as part of the original edition of Sur le mur d’en face (1979), a rare and important publication that brings together text and image in a dialogue emblematic of Soulages’ artistic vision.

This screenprint illustrates Pierre Soulages’s exploration of black as a source of light. The work contrasts a deep black flat area with a striated brick-red surface, created by rubbing, which reveals the texture of the support. The contrast between opaque ebony and vibrant copper generates an intense visual tension, heightened by the totemic structure of the composition.
Printed in an edition of 100, this print is one of 15 artist’s proofs (A.P. 8/15), signed by Soulages himself. It was gifted with a handwritten dedication to Daniel Abadie, art critic and exhibition curator.
