Niki de Saint Phalle revisits the figure of the Hanged Man, the twelfth major arcana of the Marseilles Tarot, infusing it with her own symbolic and spiritual interpretation. Hanging upside down, the figure traditionally perceived as passive or sacrificial becomes, under the artist's hand, an archetype of transformation, introspection and rebirth.
In the early 1960s, the artist discovered the world of tarot through Eva Aeppli, Jean Tinguely's first companion. Fascinated by the mysteries of the Tarot de Marseille and its resonance with the Kabbalah, she began to explore its meanings, seeing it as a form of ancient wisdom and a way of freeing herself from her Catholic upbringing. She herself practices divination, seeking answers to her artistic, personal and existential dilemmas.
