In I Dreamt I Was in Arizona, Niki de Saint Phalle offers us a dreamlike vision of a land that had a profound effect on her. This diaphanous lithograph oscillates between dream and reality, like a mirage emerging from a nocturnal desert.
The pencil effect that runs through the composition, mingled with the pastel hues, gives the work a feeling of a snapshot, of a memory barely touched. It's as if the artist were trying to capture a fleeting impression, a vision somewhere between waking and dreaming. The organic, fluid forms evoke both the arid terrain of Arizona and the imaginary beings that populate Saint Phalle's universe.
