The Nanas series was born in 1964, inspired by the pregnancy of her friend Clarice Rivers. Niki de Saint Phalle imagined female figures with blossoming, dancing, colorful forms: free, joyful, powerful women. These exuberant sculptures embody femininity in all its diversity, breaking with traditional representations of the female body.
But behind this explosion of color and vitality lies a profound rebellion. Through her Nanas, the artist is not simply seeking to celebrate women. It's a political act, a gesture of refusal in the face of the norms of a society dominated by rationality, science and male power. In her autobiography Traces, she puts it bluntly:
"A woman in the civilization of men is like a negro in the civilization of whites. She has the right to refuse, to revolt. The bloody banner is raised."
Niki de Saint Phalle questions the way bodies are viewed, demands the freedom to exist outside imposed frameworks, denounces systems of exclusion. Her art is a political gesture, an invitation to think differently about the body, gender and social norms. Nana Power becomes a symbol of feminine strength, joyful and rebellious.
