In I Dreamt I Was in Arizona, Niki de Saint Phalle offers us a dreamlike vision of a land that had a profound effect on her. This diaphanous lithograph oscillates between dream and reality, like a mirage emerging from a nocturnal desert.
The pencil effect that runs through the composition, mingled with the pastel hues, gives the work a feeling of a snapshot, of a memory barely touched. It's as if the artist were trying to capture a fleeting impression, a vision somewhere between waking and dreaming. The organic, fluid forms evoke both the arid terrain of Arizona and the imaginary beings that populate Saint Phalle's universe. This desert is not hostile, but a territory of inner exploration, a space of metamorphosis and contemplation.
