In the late 1960s, when Niki de Saint Phalle was developing her Nanas series, issues of equality, civil rights and sexual freedom were sweeping through Western society. Depicting a mixed-race couple in the throes of desire was a way of affirming the legitimacy of all unions. The Franco-American artist transformed intimacy into a political gesture: loving freely became an act of resistance against norms and prejudices.
