Our selection of lithographs accompanies the work of poet, historian and art critic Patrick Waldberg (1913-1985). This American and Parisian by adoption evolved close to the Surrealist group, notably Max Ernst, who inspired several works and artistic collaborations.
On the subject of Miró, Waldberg is particularly eloquent on the occasion of their work together, which resulted in the art book we're interested in, La mélodie acide. The book, composed of Waldberg's text and Miró's illustrations, brings together fourteen color lithographs which, in our version, are printed on Japanese paper.
Late works in Miró's career, the lithographs each present variations on a pictorial system that has been recognized since the 1970s, namely the use of black in thick lines, here forming silhouettes of figures. We can only make them out, thanks to the evocation of eyes and noses. These figures are filled with bright primary colors: red, blue, green and yellow. Miró also makes the color black his own, energizing the composition with swirls, dots, stars and spots.
