Niki de Saint Phalle illustrates a feared but essential card, the sixteenth arcana of the tarot. In the esoteric tradition, The Tower symbolizes the threat to all creation, physical and mental. It evokes crises, upheavals and revelations that shatter illusion to enable more authentic reconstruction. It's a card of chaos, but also of liberation.
The Tower is not just a symbol or a metaphor for the artist. When she was creating this card in the Tarot Garden in Tuscany, the artist was going through a severe attack of rheumatoid arthritis. She was convinced that her bodily suffering was linked to the negative energy of the card, and chose to rebalance herself by creating other “positive” sculptures inspired by the tarot. For Niki de Saint Phalle, cards have an influence on reality: they act, heal or destroy. Art becomes an almost magical ritual of transformation, where creating is also exorcising.
