For Soulages, printmaking is above all a relationship with paper which—more than just a support—gives light to the image through contrast. In his text “On the Wall Opposite”, he describes paper as “a magnificent, living material,” and adds, “there’s a kind of life in the relationship between ink and paper, which is not at all the same in lithography and engraving.” Here, the glossiness of the black ink and the transparency of the wash energetically overlap on the whiteness of the sheet, blending contrast in a shared pursuit of light.
