Some light stains
At the end of 1971, Niki de Saint Phalle was asked to create a monumental sculpture for children in Jerusalem, in a garden in the working-class district of Kiryat Hayovel. The artist imagined a black-and-white head over eight meters high, which she named the Golem.
Traditionally, the Golem is a protective creature born of clay and magic. Niki de Saint Phalle reinterprets it as a monumental slide, where children find refuge in its immense smile. Far from being a silent guardian, he becomes a living playmate.
In this lithograph, Niki de Saint Phalle brings the Golem to life. The three tongue-twisters become paths of adventure, where we can sense the pleasure of children having fun.
