After Le temps menaçant (1929)

"Threatening Time", painted in 1929 whilst Magritte was staying with Salvador Dalí in Spain. The work bears the mark of his influence: the bare female torso, the tension between desire and strangeness, and that atmosphere of a latent threat emanating from an apparently serene image all echo the Catalan painter’s style. But whereas Dalí overloads the image to the point of hallucination, Magritte empties it, stripping it of its meaning without substituting another. The unease lies not in excess, but in the lack of meaning.
