André Masson was trained in drawing at an early age and developed a body of work in which the body, eroticism, and metamorphosis constitute the main themes of his creation. In the 1920s, he became close to the Surrealist group and maintained close ties with André Breton, taking part in research into the unconscious.
Greek mythology was one of his major sources of inspiration. Myth is never illustrative: it becomes a symbolic language in which the human body merges with landscape and cosmos. Here, the female figure, both statuary and organic, seems to emerge from earth and water, within a space inhabited by cosmic signs.
