Le lézard aux plumes d'or is an art book in which Miró illustrates his own text with fifteen lithographs. The artist preferred the term "illumination" to "illustration", borrowing from the term used for medieval works prior to printing.
Each plate has its own chromatic composition, with the background playing a key role. The black background flattens the image, accentuating the graphic effect with an approach similar to that of ancient Greek ceramists. After sketching the outlines of the figures, they would circle them in black, then refine the details with a fine brush.
The work is a poetic monument in which Miró illustrates his knowledge of prehistoric, ancient and medieval scripts, developing a new plastic repertoire of his own, marked by the surrealist spirit.
