Etching allows Soulages to explore a material that is never merely a means, but the very heart of the work. The copper is subjected to erosion, and this transformation becomes the creative principle. The engraver’s gesture consists in removing, in cutting into the surface, so as to reveal what the material already contains in potential. The plate thus bears the marks of duration: the textures, irregularities and horizontality of the form give the impression of a surface slowly worked over time.
This relationship between engraving and material reaches a form of culmination in Eau-forte XXXV (1979). Its “black and mordant-gold” inking gives the copper an almost incandescent presence. The mordant-gold appears less as a colour than as a manifestation of the material itself: the warm gleam of the metal, observed by the engraver on the plate, seems to pass directly into the print. The impression thus preserves something of the copper even before it becomes an image.
