Henry Moore breaks free from any narrative interpretation of the Gospel text in order to capture its universal dimension. Mary and Elizabeth are not recognisable; they are anonymous, almost monolithic women, in whom the individuality of their faces gives way to the presence of their bodies. This simplification reflects one of Moore’s constant concerns: the search for the permanence of fundamental forms.
