‘Still Life with Lemons and Three Vases’ belongs to a period in which Henri Matisse was deepening his exploration of the construction of pictorial space. Drawing on his Cézannean heritage and his own reflections, he explored a sense of depth based on the superimposition of planes and colour relationships rather than on classical perspective. The objects are simplified, almost reduced to their essential volumes: this tendency towards Synthetism enabled Matisse to move beyond mere representation to achieve a structured vision, in which each form contributes to the balance of the composition.
