Through the erosion of copper, Soulages brings to light a renewed relationship between matter and humankind.
In this etching, the act of subtraction becomes a defining gesture: it is no longer a matter of adding, but of removing, of revealing. The white of the paper then creates a tension with the copper imprint, whose altered texture and seemingly corroded horizontal lines suggest a slow, painstaking passage of time, in which the metal retains the memory of the gesture.
