Jean-Pierre Pophillat was a French figurative painter and lithographer, born on 29 August 1937 in Vichy and died on 19 September 2020 in Paris.
Born in the Pergola clinic in Vichy, Jean-Pierre Pophillat lived the first nine years of his life in Lapalisse where his father was a pharmacist's assistant and his mother a piano teacher. From 1946 he lived in Raincy, where his parents were herbalists.
In 1957, he was admitted to the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris in Roger Chapelain-Midy's studio, and as a young man he took part in the Salon de la Jeune Peinture alongside Bernard Buffet, Maurice Boitel, Xavier Valls, Michel-Henry and Pierre-Henry. In 1964, he won the Casa de Velázquez Prize (he was part of the 35th class with Arnaud d'Hauterives) and stayed in Madrid until 1962. Since 1959, he has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including: Salon de la Jeune Peinture, Salon d'Automne of which he became a member in 19723, Salon Comparaisons where he exhibited for forty years in Maurice Boitel's group, Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts, Salon des artistes français, of whose committee and jury he became a member. The Prix de la Marine Nationale awarded to him in 1978 earned him a trip on board La Jeanne to Polynesia.
He regularly paints in the vicinity of his properties in Cannes and Deauville with lively and colourful works that inspire joie de vivre. Gérald Schurr also cites landscapes of the Vosges and the Bay of Arcachon.
