Created between 1951 and the late 1970s, Pierre Soulages's printed oeuvre forms an autonomous body of work that occupies a major place in his artistic journey. Invited by Hans Hartung to work at the printshop of Roger and Madeleine Lacourière, he approached printmaking as a new territory, governed by its own plastic constraints.
The year 1957 marked a decisive turning point: wishing to obtain deeper blacks, he extended the acid bite until it perforated a copper plate. This perforation revealed the untouched whiteness of the paper, aligning with Soulages's constant pursuit of contrasts between light and dark.
The engraved grooves, variations in inking, reliefs left by deep cuts, or plate cutouts produce a play of surfaces that modulates the way light reflects off the sheet.
The streaks, hollows, and reliefs of his etchings prefigure Outrenoir (Beyond Black), with a foundational principle rooted in a single idea: how to make matter the birthplace of light.
