Jean-Gabriel Chauvin (1886–1976), known as Chauvin, is one of the pioneers of abstract sculpture. He was also a virtuoso draftsman. As in his sculpture, one recognizes in his drawings his abstract exploration of three-dimensionality. Influenced by realism and post-impressionism, he retains the essential lessons of these movements but purifies reality, transforming it into a form of expressive abstraction, faithful to the embodiment of a concept in and through matter.
Charcoal, soft and fragile, allows for a wide range of textures: from fine and delicate lines to bolder, broader marks. Combined with a highly expressive gesture, and depending on the pressure applied and the blending or rubbing techniques used, it creates subtle or strong variations of lightness and darkness. One can appreciate more or less pronounced transitions between shadow and light. Chauvin adopts a sharp, dramatic contrast that draws attention to specific details through the interplay of opaque strokes and blurred areas.
Chauvin boldly combines organic forms reminiscent of a human body—alive and physical—with geometric elements. These fantastical forms, tinged with sensuality, both organic and geometric, generate tensions in a delicate balance between opposing forces. The dynamism and rhythm of his compositions, the impressions of volume, and the harmony between lightness and perpetual movement are striking.
