In Resonance with the Exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg

The Musée du Luxembourg is devoting, until January 11, 2026, an exceptional exhibition to Pierre Soulages, entitled Soulages, Another Light. Paintings on Paper. Bringing together more than 130 works, including some never before exhibited, this presentation highlights the creative power of the artist on this intimate medium of paper.

This spotlight reminds us how Soulages, beyond his famous monumental canvases and his Outrenoirs, has always given an essential place to more fragile and experimental techniques: inks, walnut stain, gouaches… mediums that reveal another dimension of his work, closer and more immediate.

The Art of Printmaking in Soulages

Among these mediums, prints occupy a special place. Whether lithographs, etchings or screenprints, Soulages conceived these works as genuine fields of plastic exploration. They are not mere variations of his canvases but autonomous creations, where each gesture, each removal of material, each contrast of black and light affirms his radicality.

The relative rarity of this body of work – around 118 original prints recorded – gives each one a particular importance. These works, of smaller format than the canvases, invite the viewer to a direct encounter, where the gaze is lost in the depth of blacks and surprised by the bursts of light that emerge.

On the occasion of this event, we have gathered in our space at 6, rue de l’Échaudé – Paris 6th a selection of original prints by Pierre Soulages: etchings, lithographs, and screenprints emblematic of his printed work.

Among them, some pieces convey with intensity the play between opacity and transparency, others reveal the power of the scraped or brushed gesture that makes light arise at the very heart of black. Each print bears witness to the same demand as his canvases: that of opening the gaze to a total sensory experience, where matter becomes light.
