From 1953 onwards, Poliakoff made blue the dominant color in his canvases and graphic work, which he treated in monochrome. The marriage of forms, through attention to their contours, develops in two stages. In the background, a complex construction in several shades of blue gives a sense of agitation. In the foreground, elementary shapes - a band and a circle - calm the composition.
The circle also appears in his work during this period, adding to the rarity of this work. The composition is almost identical to that of the gouache he produced three years earlier, entitled Symphonie bleu. Here, the light colors of grayish white and blue, almost transparent, illuminate the composition, and the few touches of orangey pink balance it out by their complementarity.
