“Gordes signifies the end of my hesitations between transposed figuration and non-figuration”.
- Victor Vasarely (1969)
For Vasarely, this small village in Provence is the cradle of abstraction. He sees in its stones a contradictory perspective: the eye is unable to differentiate between the shadow of a wall, fullness and emptiness merge, shapes and backgrounds alternate. Reality gradually detaches itself from figurative art.
The wooden background creates a contrast with the silhouette of the château, suggesting a harmony between the architecture and its surroundings. This interaction highlights his stylistic evolution, with figurative representation gradually fading away to make way for an exploration of shapes and textures. Wood thus becomes a key element, symbolizing the transition to more dynamic, evolving artistic expressions.
