Conceived in 1967, the very year of René Magritte's death, Le dernier cri revisits one of the most fertile motifs of his late repertoire: the leaf-tree. A vast green leaf, standing upright like a silhouette, encloses at its heart the shadow of a tree whose veins become its branches, set before a landscape of bluish mountains beneath a limpid sky. On the right, a section of cracked wall frames the scene, recalling the window device so dear to the painter. Here Magritte carries the play of analogies to its conclusion, the whole and the part exchanging places without hierarchy. The title, with its thoroughly Surrealist irony, plays on the double meaning of the French expression – 'the latest fashion' and 'the last cry' – and seems to present the image as the final word of an artist who never ceased to question the appearances of reality.
