A symbol of freedom, of soaring, but also of distance, Braque’s bird echoes the themes of love, desire and separation that run through Apollinaire’s collection. The shape that corresponds to it, resembling a propeller, evokes the world of aviation associated with Louise de Coligny-Châtillon, one of the first French female aviators and the poet’s muse, to whom the poems in the collection are dedicated.
