Sirène
Sculpture, 2000
Edition : IV/V
Catalog : [Mas 49]
Bronze with brown patina
Created in 1937
The Siren bronze we present here represents a reissue from the 2000s, inherited from Jean-Gabriel Chauvin's model. This sculpture combines abstraction and subtle figuration. Playing on the mythological theme of the mermaid, Chauvin deforms and reinvents the legendary creature through organic, sinuous forms. The fluid curves of the sculpture evoke both the elegance of water and the robustness of the material.
The contrast between smooth and textured surfaces reflects a tension between strength and delicacy, recalling the duality of the mermaid herself, half-woman, half-fish. By reinterpreting a classic myth with a resolutely contemporary aesthetic, Chauvin succeeds in creating a work that invites contemplation of transformation and the balance between nature and abstraction.
