The ‘Poule’ piece demonstrates the freedom with which Picasso embraced ceramics from 1947 onwards, in the Madoura studio in Vallauris. The white slip, applied as a luminous background, is overlaid with a blue glaze whose variations enliven the surface with an almost watercolour-like lightness. But it is the relationship between form and decoration that reveals the genius of the piece: Picasso does not merely decorate a jug; he transforms it. The spout becomes a beak, the neck becomes plumage: the object’s functionality and its figurative dimension become one.
