After Joan Miró

This beautiful print is based on the legendary ‘Constellations’ series, comprising 23 gouaches on paper painted by Miró in 1940 and 1941 in Varangeville-sur-Mer and Palma de Mallorca, two places to which the artist fled to escape Paris and the war. It is a legendary series because, contrary to his usual habits, Miró cut himself off from the world and refocused on his inner life, listening to a great deal of classical music and recharging his batteries. The result is breathtaking in its balance, rhythm and dynamism. The series is among the works most sought after by collectors. The Centre Pompidou holds the same work (Inventory No. AM 1999-4 (6)) as the one we are offering. Here, Miró develops a style that would prove decisive for his future work. The background depicts the sky, which fascinated Miró throughout his life. From this background emerge Miró’s wonderfully poetic creatures. The moon, the stars – the spiritual realm for Miró. Miró’s entire dancing, whimsical universe is right there.
A masterpiece by Miró, whose dearest wish was to ‘stimulate the imagination’.
