In 1958, Georges Braque produced two original prints, an etching and a lithograph, depicting a white bird facing left, nestled in a colored oval and surmounted by an imposing “X”. The meaning of this ambivalent symbol, however, remains a mystery to observers.
This work features a stylized, uncluttered bird, elegantly spreading its wings. The circular green background, which could symbolize the abstract sky, highlights the bird's brilliant purity, while its flowing lines breathe dynamism into the composition. Fascinated by flight and the idea of freedom, Braque creates a suspended, timeless vision in which the bird seems to want to escape the frame, yet remains integrated into this geometric structure. The black cross provides a striking contrast to the lightness of the central subject, adding a visual tension that reinforces the work's graphic impact. The bird, a recurring motif in Braque's work, here embodies spiritual elevation, a being suspended between earthly weight and aspiration towards celestial freedom.
