Created in 1953, as Hans Hartung was establishing himself as one of the leading figures of lyrical abstraction in Paris, this etching and aquatint transposes the energy of his painterly gesture onto the copper plate. Against a pale green ground lightly tinged with ochre, a sheaf of deep black lines springs from the base of the sheet and unfurls in taut curves, like stems bent by the wind. In counterpoint, fine blue-green vertical hatchings enliven the upper part and open up the space in several layers. Far from mere improvisation, each stroke stems from a rigorous construction in which apparent spontaneity is held in check. This tension between impulse and control, central to Hartung’s work in the early 1950s, makes this print a remarkable testament to his graphic language.
