After Georges Braque, circa 1955

Trace of an old tear restored in the lower margin
This fine etching is from a large edition published around 1955 by Maeght (Paris), based on an oil on canvas by Georges Braque. This is one of the artist's favorite themes, and he was one of the great masters of the still life from the 1910s onwards. During this period, he abandoned landscapes and human figuration in favor of this genre, so well established in French art history.
While his contribution to Cubism was an extrapolation of the lessons of Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), he also inherited the tradition of the still-life genre, and was often compared to Jean Siméon Chardin (1699-1779). These two intrinsic components of his work evolve from the study of space and the relationship of the represented object to its environment into a more allusive representation, as in our work.
Never one for mimesis, Braque invites us into an intimate space marked by a play of transparency, where he articulates his composition around a jug, delicately adorned with evanescent floral motifs, and a bird, signified by a black silhouette encircled by a white line. Using a muted chromatic palette, the artist takes care of simple subjects, approaching a certain asceticism that renews the classicism of the genre.
