This lithograph bears witness to the chromatic power of Karel Appel, a major figure in the CoBrA group. The cat, with its vivid, contrasting colours, seems to spring from the pictorial surface, carried along by a spontaneous, instinctive gesturality. Its colourful, almost incandescent brilliance enters into tension with the orange background, creating a visual shock that translates the raw energy and élan vital so dear to the artist. With this composition, Appel asserts a style of painting free of convention, where color becomes language, a cry, living matter.
